This postgraduate teaching degree offers an employment-based, fast-tracked teacher-education program. It prepares you to register as a teacher in your specialisation area, and focuses on hands-on learning in schools.
The Master of Applied Teaching (Secondary Education) at Victoria University (VU) aims to strengthen and diversify the teaching workforce by prioritising candidates that are culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and also those that are Indigenous.
With paid employment in a Victorian Government secondary school, and a Department of Education scholarship, you will be supported to become an effective classroom teacher within 18 months.
The Master of Applied Teaching (Secondary Education) program at Victoria University is part of the Department of Education Teach Today Teach Tomorrow program.
For the duration of the course, you will engage in intensive study, one full day per week online in real time (ORT), participating in classes via zoom.
Priority for admission will be given to:
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Indigenous students
applicants with English, mathematics, and science qualifications.
Applicants from diverse backgrounds and who have experience with people from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
In addition to school employment, you will be eligible for a $16,000 scholarship to support the cost of your studies.

Course structure
Classes & placements
Classes are delivered online in real time, which means you will need to attend online classes at set times for one full day per week. Placements are in-person at a school.
Phase 1: Placement phase Duration 6 months
University classes one full day per week while undertaking placement in a Victorian Government secondary-school setting supported by a school-based mentor and the VU team for this course.
Phase 2: Permission to Teach (PTT) Duration 12 months
You will continue university classes one day per week. You will also begin in a paid paraprofessional role under Permission to Teach registration (PTT) in a government secondary school setting. You will be supported by a school-based mentor and the VU team while you continue PTT work and on-the-job skill development until course completion.
Note that once you have applied and are accepted into the course, the course team will manage your enrolment in the correct units.
Fees & scholarships
Government scholarship
The Teach Tomorrow program offers a taxable scholarship of up to $16,000 while you study for the first 12 months.
Indicative fees for full-time student: AU$4,738 per year
Each unit has an associated cost. Your final student contribution amount will be the total cost of the units you select, which may be higher or lower than the fee listed here depending on the units you choose.
If you are not eligible for a Commonwealth supported place, you will pay the full cost of each unit.

Graduates of the Master of Applied Teaching (Secondary Education) who have passed the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) are eligible for registration as secondary teachers with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
