Overview

This unit of study explores how conflict in groups and communities is shaped by power, inequality and structural violence. Grounded in peace studies, critical community development and theories of oppression, this unit will support students to critically examine the roots of conflict and possibilities for transformation. Through case studies, experiential exercises, and critical analysis students will engage with concepts such as social exclusion, cultural violence, grassroots peacebuilding and collective liberation. This unit equips students with practical tools for understanding and working through conflict and building more just, inclusive and peaceful communities.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse key theoretical and practical frameworks in critical community development and peacebuilding;
  2. Appraise the root causes of conflict in communities, including the structural, systemic, and political drivers;
  3. Critically review a broad range of community programs, actions and strategies;
  4. Conceptualise a community based program response;
  5. Exhibit reflective skills in writing.
